On Being a Children's Author

Updated: Mar 1, 2022

The beauty of being an author is that on a good day, you can shut out the world and travel anywhere in the universe from the sanctuary of your office, your studio, from a chair sitting by a window or wherever your inspiration happens to grab you. You go alone, and on a flight of fancy meet friends who feel real to you. You can land without ever spilling your coffee. Being a children’s author is no light thing. The destination is often deceptively inaccessible. You must find a way to get to learning, to healing, to happy, to funny, to new perspectives-- or first ones, to open doors of imagination or simply a peaceful place before bedtime. Your work lands in soft hearts. In these turbulent times, it’s important to take those hearts and minds with you from the beginning of the journey and land often in places where grown-up issues can wait till later. Much, much later.
